Triggered by Life? Overloaded Nervous System? | How God Gives You Peace
Have you ever reacted to something and almost immediately thought, Why did I respond like that?
Maybe you snapped. Got angry and spoke harshly. Felt completely overwhelmed. Or found yourself overreacting?
Friend, I had one of those weekends.
After a delayed flight, a canceled connection, and realizing I would miss an important part of my son's college move-in, I could feel myself getting more and more triggered.
And it reminded me of something important:
There is a physiological response happening inside your body when you feel threatened or stressedābut there is also a spiritual opportunity in what happens next.
In today's episode, I'm breaking down what actually happens in your body when you're triggered, how your nervous system and stress hormones respond, and why repeatedly living in that heightened state can affect your health.
But we're going deeper than simply trying to "calm your nervous system."
We're getting to the root.
Because God has already given us a way back to peace.
Isaiah 26:3 tells us:
"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."
When you learn to notice the trigger, catch your response, and pivot your mind back to Christ, you don't have to let one stressful moment determine everything that happens next.
And as you continually renew your mind with God's Word, something deeper begins to changeāyour heart posture.
In This Episode, You'll Learn:
-
What happens physiologically when your brain perceives a threat
-
How the sympathetic nervous system and HPA axis activate the stress response
-
How prolonged stress can affect cardiovascular function, digestion, metabolism, immune regulation, and inflammation
-
Why being triggered isn't necessarily the problemāwhat happens next matters
-
How to notice, catch, and pivot your response
-
Why returning your mind to Christ can help interrupt the cycle
-
Why peace and self-control are fruit of the Spiritānot simply behavior modification
Scriptures Mentioned:
Isaiah 26:3 ā "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."
John 14:27 ā Jesus reminds us that His peace is different from the peace the world gives.
Galatians 5:22ā23 ā Peace and self-control are fruit of the Spirit.
Remember This:
My mind is stayed on Christ; therefore, my heart is at peace.
You may not be able to control the delayed flight, the person who cuts you off, the unexpected phone call, or what someone says to you.
But you can learn to recognize what is happening inside of you, return your mind to Christ, and allow His peace to influence what happens next.
And the more you renew your mind in God's Word, the more your heart begins to reflect Himāso that peace isn't simply something you're trying to manufacture in the moment.
It begins becoming part of your response.
If this episode encouraged you, share it with a friend who may be feeling overwhelmed or easily triggered by life right now.
Until next time,
